Cattle are ruminants, so their digestions work
best on fresh grass and dry hay. The result is meat that is very
different from grain-finished beef (less likely to have E. coli
O57:H7 in the gut, for instance). To keep our calves growing through
the cold of Saskatchewan winters they need some grain, but their
main diet both in summer and winter is forage from our farms, mainly
timothy & alfalfa. All those dandelions make good feed, too.
The cattle never see a livestock semi-trailer transport, much less
the grain-rich feed that a commercial feedlot routinely serves.
